An original reflection on courage

An unfamiliar responsibility can make an ordinary morning feel heavy. Perhaps you are preparing for a difficult conversation, caring for your family, or beginning something you have put off. You may wish that courage would arrive before you start. Sometimes, however, the first faithful step is simply bringing your uncertainty to God.

Joshua 1:9 is spoken to Joshua after Moses’ death, as he prepares to lead Israel into the land God has promised. The surrounding passage connects courage with attention to God’s instruction. Read within that setting, the verse is more than a general message about confidence: Joshua is called to undertake a particular responsibility in dependence on God.

For Christian readers, this passage can encourage a thoughtful response to fear. It does not require us to hide our feelings or rush into every opportunity. We can pray, seek wise counsel, and ask what love and honesty require of us today. Courage may be quiet: making an apology, asking for help, or keeping a promise when doing so feels difficult.

Today’s footage shows Cologne Cathedral in Cologne, Germany. Its recognizable twin spires give this daily moment a real place in the world. As you watch the camera move, take time to notice where you feel hurried. You do not need to turn the building into a symbol for every detail of the passage. Let the scene offer a moment of attention while the Scripture leads the reflection.

Choose one responsibility that matters today. Reduce it to a small action you can actually complete: write the first sentence, make the phone call, prepare what you need, or invite someone trustworthy to help. A small beginning can be an honest expression of faith, even when you still feel uncertain.

End this pause by naming both your concern and your next step in prayer. Leave room for patience if the outcome takes longer than you hoped. Faithfulness is practised in the way we respond to people and responsibilities, one day at a time. Today, you can begin with a request for wisdom and a willingness to act with care.

A simple prayer

Lord, guide my next step. Help me respond with wisdom, honesty, and care. Amen.

One practice for today

Name one responsibility you have been avoiding. Choose one small, realistic action and set aside ten minutes to begin. Ask someone trustworthy for support if you need it.

Reflection question: What is one faithful step I can take today, even while I feel uncertain?
